After taking my Bolivian Rams to my lfs it turns out that they were indeed 2 males, not a pair as I had been led to believe by another lfs. I came home with another couple of albino corys but really missed seeing the Rams in the tank so on my next visit I got a small pair of GBR`s.

Can I please just call on the experience and knowledge of the members here to confirm the sex of the GBR`s please? I am hoping they`re actually a male and a female.

Hopefully the photos I`ve got will be clear enough, if not I`ll have to see if I can dig out the digi camera instead of using my mobile phone:

Male?

Female?

the female will colour up a nice purple/pink colour on the belly so going by the pics the first looks more female but its very faint normally they are very obvious.

Hard to tell at moment but looking at the 3rd picture the one on the right looks like a possible female pink belly is the best way to tell.

When did you get them? they both look like they could be females that. Males are normally alot brighter and the first few rays of the dorsal fin are normally alot longer
more like this
male ram
male ram

Look like a probable male and female to me. The pics are not the best. In focus side on pics, with reasonable lighting would help.

Thanks for the replies B-)

I got them both yesterday so I`m thinking their colours will come out a bit more once they`re settled and feeling more at home. I know the pics aren`t as clear as they could be and that doesn`t help, I`ll get the digi camera out and will hopefully be able to get some pics that are much clearer. I really am hoping that I`m not back to square one with 2 males again.......fingers crossed

If you want a pair your probably best to get 4-5 and wait for 2 to pair up and get rid of the rest.

even if lfs tanks its pretty obvious which are females due to the bright pink/purple belly

I`d love to be able to get more but as I only have 180ltrs and quite a selection of fish in there already, I can`t have more than the 2 unfortunately. Maybe if I get the bigger Seashell tank I`m after I`ll have the room to do so.

I`ve tried with the digi camera but due to the fact I haven`t used it for so long it`s gonna take me some time to work out the best settings on it but I have managed to get a short video clip and hopefully that`ll be clearer and will help more.

Thanks again for the replies :)

Well after a few days in the tank one of the Rams colour is definitely brighter than the other, the second one is slighly brighter than it was but neither seem to be any pinker in the belly area than before. I`m inclined to think I have 2 males but will give it a bit longer to see if their colouring comes out more.
