me again, wow its strange to be a newbie all over again, used to giving advice with marine.

Can I use garden compost - the stuff you get in great big bags as a substrate, or atleast as an underlayer? and would it be safe with fish and inverts - wish to have a tank with a mixture of fish and shrimps - amano are looking good......

I wouldn't suggest it since if you get the wrong stuff then it may degrade too quickly. I've used pond soil under sand which is ok and the plants seem to like it but I'm not sure I'd do it again since the layers eventually mix and it's a nightmare when you want to move established plants.

ahh why is tff being so slow? did the servers crash or something? as i noticed its been offline for a couple of days...

If you use compost or soil straight out of the garden then it will be fine and shouldn't need too much of a barrier.

You cannot add fish for a few weeks though as it is full of ammonia and this will leech out in these first few weeks.
