Hey guys,
well an interesting thing happened to me today,i spotted a sign that said garage sale and decided to follow it,i was hoping to find a fish tank there as i read about so many stories of you guys here getting really cheap ones,
Well as i got there,i saw a man carry a 2 footer (with all the trimmings and a few fish in some bags) to his car, i felt a bit disapointed.
I decided to check it out anyway to see if there was anything else, i was looking at some old books when i bumped into something, it was a bucket filled with water, and to my suprise there were two small fish in there,i couldnt see clearly what they were but i decided to go to the owner and ask some Qs about them,
he said that they were the two fish the guy who bought the tank didn't want,i asked if i could catch them and see what they were, and they were Cockatoo (cichlid) fry!I asked how much they were and he said i could take them for free!
theyre around 3 cms at the moment and currently in my community tank, happily buzzing around,i was going to put them in my fry tank but decided against it as Jewels are in there at the moment
well, just had to share my story
thanks for reading

That's pretty cool, getting free fish at a garage sale. I haven't shopped for many aquarium supplies at garage sales yet but there's an upcoming garage sale in my neighborhood and I'm gonna check it out for aquariums or fish.

ah too bad about the 2footer >< any idea how much that was sold for?

you have now inspired me to go about the streets to look for garage sales on the weekend ! somethign to do in the mornings i guess ! hope i get lucky :kana:

I found a 55 gallon on the side of the road. Turns out that the middle brace was broken, but it makes a good reptile tank! But I am soooo jealous about the cockatoo fry! I had to drive an hour to get mine, and you find someone getting rid of them for free!

You can fix a broken center support, I did and it is good as new. Cut a strip of aluminum flashing the same width as the support and about 6"-8" long, Then drill & pop rivet it to the underside of the support [I used 8 rivets] and it will be good as new. Make sure the broken parts of the support are touching when you put the rivets in. I filled it back up and had no bow in the glass. :D

same with me,it took ages just to get to see a cockatoo, and they're $13 each here!(but thats full grown ofcoarse)but still a huge bargain!

How very lucky for you, but think of the fish - how lucky for THEM that you came along. Makes you wonder what their fate might have been if you hadn't come along.

Nice find!

actually,i asked the guy what would happen to them if someone doesnt get them, he said(his exact words) "i would feed them to the cat" :(
and he wasn't joking either
