hi all
first post here , just a little info needed really , bought a 5ft x2ft x2ft tank second hand with a fluval fx5 filter, tank was running when i picked it up and left the filter full of water "tropical fresh" drove the tank and filter home for an hour and fitted it all up then filled the tank used cycle and the right amount of water conditioner.

how soon do you think i can put the fish in the tank that came with it, 12" oscar 2 x green severums ..which are in another mature tank at the moment ..

any help would be great thanks

Was the FX5 (and its bacteria) supporting a bioload comparable to your Oscar and Green Sev, no more than ~2 days before you picked up the tank and filter? If not, you need to either run your fish's old filter alongside the FX5 in the 5x2x2 for at least six weeks (moving a portion of your old media to the new filter to help colonise it), or transfer all the old filter media across to the FX5. Given how messy Oscars can be, you probably want to run the FX5 and your old filter alongside it anyway, I run an APS2000EF alongside an FX5 in my 5x2x2 riverine setup.

In essence, as long as your established filter media is moving to the upgrad tank with your Oscar and Sev, you can add them as soon as the tank is filled up and running at a similar temp to their old tank. Just drip acclimitise them to allow for any water chemistry differences, unless the 5x2x2 has been filled only with their old tank's water.
