Furcata (forktail) Rainbows

Don't lie..you didn't take all those picture did you? :shifty: :p How the hell do you do that m8? Awsome close-ups.

Thanks helterskel, I haven’t tried to breed them, a couple have managed to survive in the plants. I may give it a go in a small tank I have.

Isnail, don’t think they care about the photo period and they do fine in harder water.

Yeah piper they stay in the top six inches of the tank mostly.

Thanks babybetta for the nice comment,

Syntax thanks, yeah I did take them :) I got a dslr a few months ago I take lots of pics and delete most of them.

you can see that bits of this guys fins are missing due to fights, they grow back again!

Thanks for the info Liam & Helterskelter :good:

How long have you had them Liam? I read that they have fairly short lives (1-2 years). Again, really superb photos :kewlpics:

I just picked some young ones up a couple weeks ago. I got three males, three females. One male did not survive; I've replaced it with a female.

I am very impressed with the photos! These guys really are very fast and small.

My pH is around 7.9, kH 9, GH 14, temperature 76F. My tank is 24L x 12W x 18H.

We'll see how it goes. I have to get more plants in there. There is some cover but it is not exactly dense.

And yes they do stay near the top mostly. Also they often school together, especially when the lights are off. I have a medium current in the tank from the HOB filter.

Liam - I have a DSLR as well. Did you use flash?

ISnail I have had them for about 18 months, didn't know they were so short lived so they are getting on!

Thanks Elmer, yeah they are hard to photograph, I wanted a beter pic of the males displaying to each other but they are so fast. They are not camera shy though. I didnt use a flash, there was enough sunlight on the tank for the pics. They dont seem too bothered about having cover they stay in open water mostly, using the plants for spawning.

females

Never seen those before. They would be a great addition to my Rainbow tank.

I like the look of the females. They don't look so fierce ^_^

Not sure how accurate about the lifespan info I read. It was a little while back when I did some research on them

There is a Wikipedia topic on them. I plan to post a picture to it eventually once I get a good shot. Hint hint Liam...

This one looks innocent iSnail, :)
Znk they are much smaller than most other rainbows but they should be fine with any rainbows.
Elmer you are welcome to use the pics if you want.

 looks as if he's saying "I have wings, I can fly...."

Do you have any other Rainbows? Rainbows are some of the most beautiful shoaling fish in my opinion.

Fantastic pics Liam! Great detail...those little creatures do move quick!!!

I just wanted to share my appreciation for these silly looking things too. I'm in the U.S. and have a pair of them. Mine also usually stay in the upper region of the tank as well...and favor flake food over frozen brine shrimp, bloodworms (no matter tiny they are), and any other type of food. They also want nothing to do with their "oversized" rainbow tankmates so they pretty much keep to themselves but seem perfectly content chasing each other about.

I'm sorry to say it...but it cracks me up how they look like they're wearing makeup and the male is flailing those yellow fins above his body...LOL! I do love these fish.

Are they available in Australia??
I don't see them on the approved list for imports to Australia
http://www.fishforums.net/index.php?showto...stralia++import
however that topic does state does not include native fish.
yes I know fucarta are not native but the Aus gov may deem them so in this instance :dunno:
you may wish to PM QuotheRaven and ask for the email addy he sent his original query to,
that way you can ask about this species specifically

EDIT for manners
great pics Liam, sorry to hijack the thread
