I'm in the seventh day of a fishless cycle and am now starting to get a funny smell from the tank, nothing bad I don't think, it smells like a fish store, whereas at the beginning it smelt of a tank of water, is this the smell of the bacteria growing?

Thanks,

Jay.

Nothing to worry about tanks do smell, when they mature it has a peat smell about it.

Ah, I wasn't really worried because I know other tanks smell like that but just wondered if it was the result of bacteria, cool.

Cheers,

Jay.

If it the smell bothers you, try adding some cabon to your filter. It reduces the smell and helps to clarify your water. 'Drawback is it needs to be replaced every couple of weeks. But worth it IMO

Ah, but the smell is fine really, I only smell it if I stick my nose through the door on the canopy. Cheers for the tip though, I'll remember that for if it does get to much.

Jay.

Lol mine spreads cos my filters sprays water onto the lid.... Then when I take the lid off during the day (more light) water drips out...

What about raising the water line slightly, if poss, so the outlet is totally under water, or you could lower the filter.
It also depends on what filter you have I suppose.

Jay.
