Hi Guys,

I could do with a bit of help. I've returned home tonight to discover a white funny cotton like fungus at the back of my tank on the glass and a little more on the bogwood. Take a look:

I've done a search on topics but couldn't find anything similar. The only other change in the tank recently are...

...these little critters, but found plenty of topics on getting rid of snails, and started yesterday by not feeding last night and I'm going to put some cucumber in the tank tonight.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Steph

Did that appear in a matter of just a few hours or did you just not see it earlier? It is very weird - it may be some kind of algae but I can't tell from the pictures. How long has the tank been set up?

BTW, you don't necessarily need to get rid of the snails - they can be very useful scavengers and I rather like them... they're kinda cute :p

Well it definately just appeared. I noticed a very small patch on the bogwood about a week ago but nothing of this size so thought nothing of it, and just wasn't sure if the snails had anything to do with it as they arrived about a month ago with new plants, and there are loads of them now. The tank has been set up just over 2 years and it definately wasn't there last night. -_-

Slight change this morning, its moved slightly, not as big as last night but its not flat now its sort of got stringy bits coming off it  The bit on the bog wood has moved to my piece of rock. Too wierd, I can't find anywhere on something that looks like this.

Those snails arent really a problem. They won't hurt your fish or plants.

Have your fish been affected by this "fungus " ?

Where did you get the bog wood ?

Since it started on the wood , that may be the cause :dunno: .

Can you take the wood out , boil it , if you can , for a good , long time. 20 minutes , maybe .

Never seen anything like that :dunno:

What kind of fish is that in the first pic ? just curious

If it is fungus , it could/may have even gotten in as an airborne spore .maybe :dunno:

Hi thanks for the replies guys,

In answer to the few questions .

Lucky62-
I dont think the fish have been affected by the fungus. I got the bogwood from a lfs, they have bucket full of the stuff, i dont think it was expensive.
The fish in the first pic is a tetra, think they are known as xrays. Here's a pic

Good suggestion with boiling the bogwood, I think I will do that.

aloaring -
These snails aren't leaving any trails.

Took a couple more pics to see if it would help - they are on the next post, think too big to go on this one!

Thanks for the help so far. I don't know whether to try and get the stuff off, but with you lot on here with your heaps of knowledge I can't belive no-ones seen it before.

Anyway thanks again

Steph

I dont think snails that live in water need to be covered in slime as much as thier realtives on land do. It's not like they are going to dry out. :)

Hi Guys,

I had to put these pics on now I've managed to get them working, even now the stuff has gone.
:p
