My bogwood has been in my smaller 32L tank for just under a year. I have just put it into my newly cycled 125L tank and the Ph has dropped from 7.2 to 6.6. I know bogwood lowers Ph and i fully expected this to happen. Is it such a big worry? (i do have fish in) If so, do i so lots of water changes to try and lower it or just sit and ride it out?

How quickly did the PH drop and how much does it go up when you do a water change? PH moving around a few points is ok as long as it doesn't happen too rapidly.

Also make sure your CO2 hasn't suddenly kicked up a notch as that seems like a pretty big PH shift from just a piece of bogwood (not sure how much it can effect it though).

Well ive only added bogwood today! Waiting for a drop checker to test CO2. Ive only got a nutrafn and a 2 liter bottle going through a diffuser though.

Havent done a water change yet to test how much it goes up.

Zebra danios prefer a pH of 6.5-7 so you are ok there, platys prefer a slightly higher pH of 7-about 8.5 i think but they are pretty hardy anyway so dont worry there and ottos actually dont care what the pH is. So if i were you, i'd let the pH settle and unless it poses a threat to your fish and you see your platys dieing, i wouldnt do a thing.

I think thats all the fish in your tank covered!

Lovely thanx for the help! I can stop worrying about my tank and start worrying about my first driving lesson in just over a hour and a half

Good luck, you will do fine :)
I was worried on my first lesson
Good luck and enjoy.

The effect of pH is less important than KH or GH. Fish adjust their internal pH to their surroundings using adjustments of blood bicarbonate concentrations via exchange of acid-base equivalents at their gills (quoting Bignose). Fish will be able able to adjust their pH fairly rapidly, provided the hardness of the water does not change radically.

Large and rapid changes in KH or GH will affect a fish`s ability to exchange ions to equalise its pH with its surroundings and the "shock" the fish experiences is actually due to the change in hardness of the water, not the pH.

Dave.

first lesson should have been easy! Just remember Mirror, signal, position, speed, manouver and you should be fine. MSPSL routine. I suck at tests tho. Already failed 2 driving tests and the funny thing is i have a fork lift liscence and got 94% in it! Also, i'm gathering you have not passed your theory test yet. PM me if you want to find out how to pass that first time guaranteed :D

To start learning quickly, first master the holding point and then once you got that, its all down to observational skills. Hopfully, your eyesight is good so you will naturally look into the distance. Always think... what if!

Hi, it went really well thanx. It was only a 50 min lesson so the most part was filling in details, learning how to change gear etc etc. I drove home though  The hardest bit i found was finding the bite!

I did a 25% water change yesterday just to be on the safe side and tested PH today and its still dropped to 6! Tested my tap water again and thats showing at 7, so im going to do another 25% water change today.
