Fry!

so in the 10 months Ive been fishkeeping, Ive had many batches of sword tail, usually 5-12 babies, with 1-2 surviving. Today my variatus platy squared off so I captured her and she birthed 30 odd fry, I released her.... Im not use to such a large batch, but Im excited

Today (1 week later) I have 25 fry surviving. I started with 31... 6 lost in a week, is this normal?

Yes that is normal in my opinion. But have you noticed any fry with clamped fins and tails?

They're all clear, so I can hardly see their fins and tails at all

I would be worried if they are dying and I wouldn't say it's normal. The red mama on the picture looks sick(Is this the one with possible columnaris?)
When I kept my fry in a breeder box, I did water changes and cleaned the bottom everyday(there is almost no flow from the main tank to keep the water healthy. I didn't lose a single fry, even a premature batch survived and they couldn't swim for a good while after birth. If you have plants, moss balls, put quite a few in the breeder box. They'll be less stressed, also some microorganisms on the plants will serve as snack for them too and the plants will help filter the water in between water changes. But I would look into them being sick too if they were together with a sick fish.

The fish in the background is not the mama. But I've been doing daily cleaning in the box. They were born into a tank that was in the middle of an ick treatment. And the shortly after a treatment for the fish in the background. I don't have live plants cause no matter how many I get, the fish eat them in a week.

This is my first batch this time around and they are doing wonderful but a few years ago i had great healthy fish and fry but some of the fry in the larger batches died. I think it was agression they are bound to feel the compitition when they are around eachother so much even if they get fed just fine at first. And yes ive always knoen to keep the fry net/box super tidy all the time. But this was my experience.

Whenever I keep fry in a breeding box I lose all of them slowly. I now keep them in a breeding box and I have lost none! 15 healthy platy fry!

If you can set up another tank, I strongly reccommend you do it!
