Is a 2.5g tank big enough for fry about how many can it handle?

Is it big enough- yes
Does it have a filter?
If yes maybe 10 temporarily.
I'd only keep them there 2 or 3 months tops, or it may be bad for their growth

I also might end up with a 10g... depending on where i buy, its cheaper

To be honest, you are better off buying something bigger if you have the space and money.
This way you would be sure you have enough space to grow the fry to adulthood in the same tank. 10G is plenty for raising a big amount of fry.
As previously mentioned, you need a filter safe for fry and a heater.
