why cant i keep fry alive?
they usually last for about 2 days and then gone. water parameters seem fine. i have tried removing the male but thats even worse. the only thing i can think of is that its un filtered. would this be a problem? also water is about 6" deep.

What temperature are you running the tank at? Is the water in the tank treated of straight from the tap. Could it be that the male is not putting them back in the nest? Sorry for all the questions but there are three things which could cause it

provided you are doing small regular water changes, unfiltered will be fine at first.
ensure water has been trated or at least left to stand for a few days before being used.

what are you feeding them, if you have them long enough to their first feedings.

water is 80'. the water is straight from the tap but heated to correct temp and conditioned with blackwater extract, but isnt left for any period of time. and the male is doing a good job. its something that i am doing im sure of it. i have been giving them a little liquifry but i think that they were too young to bother with it. there is also some riccia in the tank for the infusoria.

Hi there

If they keep dying at 2 days (when their food sac runs out), then they are probably starving to death. I have found Liquifry completely useless every time. I have never cultured infusoria though. I have found that the best thing to do in the first week of hungry fry is to add everything - liquifry, infusoria if you have it, microworms or vinegar eels, baby brine shrimp - any type of food that they maybe, just might, hopefully, fit in their mouths. That seems to be the main problem in the first week - adding something that they want to eat AND that can fit in their tiny gobs. Adding small quantities of these different foods throughout the day is okay providing you siphon and do partial water changes to stop the water fouling. Treating with amquel plus routinely may help stop the water getting toxic (you may have to kickstart the cycling of the tank in weeks to come though, with a bacteria-cycle product, if the repeated addition of amquel has starved off the filter bacteria).

Hope this helps

i done this and killed my babies at a week old because i over fed it also turned the water stagnent as i don't filter that tanks.

I would look at using microworms as a first food along with infusoria. I also agree that Liquifry is useless and i would steer clear. The treatment you add to the water, does that remove the chlorine? Also are you doing water changes on the fry?

i use water conditioner as well as the blackwater extract.
i never changed the water as i was under the impression to start changing the water when the fry are 1 week old and i havent got that far yet.

Hmmm i don't get it, thats as far as my know how goes sorry i can't help more. I will have a think but in the meantime i hope someone with more experience can help.

Sorry and good luck
