Hi all, I've got a spare tank and as my female live bearers are all now shoing signs of pregnancy I've managed to persuade the missus to let me have it in the house. I plan to use sand as a substrate but have never used it before so excuse the noob question but do plants grow alright in sand?

mine set up with sand and plants grow great in it, i was surprised how quick cutting took by just putting them directly into it, get some aquatic plant fertilzer to add to the sand looks a little messy if left uncovered some add another layer of sand to hide it but great for your plants

ive heard of people used guine pig droppings are a fertaliser for there plants, just by poping one droping under the sand or gravel by the plant and lasts for a good long while

Sand is a great substrate for plants. You don't want to plant the plants too deep into it though as the sand can compact the roots. I would use only aquarium fertilizers for the plants.

I thought you were meant to keep fry tanks as bare as possible for ease of cleaning?

but then on the other hand fry love the plants etc and i have been told by many people on here to provideplanty of plant coverage. now im confused after reading this lol i just remove all my plants when i need to clean it. tis somewhat a pain in the bottom but works well for me

different things work for different people thats all i say on the matter]

different things work for different people but when it comes to ease of cleaning to me it is only laziness that would make a person sparsely decorate a tank so it is easier to clean. when i clean my tank i ahve to remove everything in there and then clean it which does take more time however in the process i am providing my fish with what they need not doing what is easier for me...and that is all i have to say on the matter
