Hi my Honduran Red Points have just spawned and the fry are about 2 days old. On inspection though I have noticed two of my Ruby Barbs have small patches of what looks like fungus I have added Melafix but wondering if I can add in Primafix as well at the same time or is this over load?

The affected fish seem fine and no behavior or eating changes like I say I have been adding melafix for about 3 days now but unsure what to do next - are there any other medications I can use that wont bump my filters ?

I have had a susspision somthing was lurking in the tank as I had very very occasional flashing from some fish a few weeks ago but that died down - affected fish at the moment are not flashing

Tank size: 125 liter
pH: 7.2
ammonia: 0
nitrite: 0
nitrate: 10
kH: n/a
gH: n/a
tank temp: 25

Fish Symptoms (include full description including lesion, color, location, fish behavior): Ruby Barb faint white patches on one side of two fish - possible wounds from breeding HRPs not 100% though

Volume and Frequency of water changes: 30% once a week

Chemical Additives or Media in your tank: just the melafix that has been added

Tank inhabitants: 2 Honduran Red Points - 5 Ruby Barbs - 2 Plecs L235 and Peckolita Braueri

Recent additions to your tank (living or decoration) - the Peckolita Braueri 3 weeks ago.

I dont have a hospital tank to transfer them too either. As horrible as it sounds if the medication will kill the fry I would rather protect the parents and save them - they breed like clockwork but this is their first brood of fry but it is the third batch of eggs in 2 and a half months.

Thanks in advance Wills

Melafix and Pimafix can be safely used together, in fact Mars Fishcare (API) recommend this in cases of persistent infections. Pimafix has anti-bacterial activity itself as well as being anti-fungal, so the two together treat a wide range of bacteria, and fungus. They won't harm the biological filter or fry when used either together or separately.

Having said that, 'faint white patches' doesn't really sound like fungus to me, as fungus is usually strikingly white/yellowish and fluffy. I'm not really sure what it might be - perhaps a touch of a bacterial infection, perhaps a small outbreak of skin parasites from stress? A picture might be useful for people in this case.

no it looks like fungus its definitly on the surface of the fish and is kind of cloudy and a bit wispy thanks for the tips got a bottle of primafix now as well so will start a weeks dosing now.

have to say I think its fantastic having you here with your knowledge :) thanks for helping out.

Any signs of darting, erratic swimming, gasping, laboured breathing, excess mucas on body or gills., red pin prick marks on fish or sores,
Any bleaching beneath the skin.

if its bad strain of columnaris melafix is no good.

no eratic swimming just the fluff and very occaisional flashing - BUT I made the idiot of all idiot mistakes today :( did a water change today and forgot to add water conditioner :( honestly can not believe i did such a stupid thing must have done over 100 water changes and i just totaly forgot - was setting up a fry tank at the same time and we were in a rush to get to an event this evening - really tense time there panicing :( just gutted added in a dose when I got in just in hope it would do some good - water stats are as normal and fish are no different - partner thinks we have lost a few fry but I dont think there are any less I think they were just more spread out when we got home rather than the cluster they are in now.

I believe I have caught this disease early on so will continue with the melafix and primafix for 1 week and if no improvement then I will start to dose with a stronger medicine I had one recommended to me today perhaps the brand was waterlife? Not sure.

Thanks for the help guys

:) Wills

Myxazin by waterlife and pimafix for columnaris in the uk.
Good Luck.

yeah thanks thats the one i was on about :) - with the water change must have put it in been monitoring all day and no blips or slips so all good there

- but the ruby barbs have been breathing qutie rapidly now dosing the tank with both melafix and primafix now will continue for one week then add carbon - if no improvement will swap to waterlife as like I say this was reccomended to me before and i have heard good things in the past I just wanted to use the MARS stuff as it is all natural - i feel a little reluctant to put chemicals in tank but obv if it will help i will :)

Are the fry in the tank as you are meant to half dose with fry.
Have you increased aeration in the tank with the meds.
If no improvement with the breathing you will have to dilute the med down with a water change.

ah thankyou :) got some fry out but not all as some are quite small got about 30 out but not noticing any losses in the main tank will pick up an air pump tomorrow morning
