Hi all,

I'm new to this site, and fairly new to fish keeping. I've had 3 mollies for roughly 4 months now (2 black and 1 white) last week my white molly died. Last night i came home from work and found a lot of fry in the tank, about 20+ I wasn't even aware that my molly was pregnant, just though she was fat! oopps! ... anyway, as it was late last night when i noticed the fry, i didn't have chance to go to the pet store to get an additional tank or a breeder net. I had to chance it and leave them in my 110 litre (uk) tank with all the other fish! ... I checked them this morning and they all seem to be fine, all my other fish don't seem bothered by them.

So, my question is, do i leave them in the tank (There's plenty of live plants, rocks, drift wood for them to hide in, but they are just swimming near the top of the water at the moment) or should i purchase a breeders net?

I've been grinding up flakes into powder to feed the fry (read that on this site) - I have some frozen blood worms, would they be good for the fry?

Any additional information anyone could give me would be great! thanks in advance

Marc

Hi Marc, welcome to the wonderful world of fishkeeping.

Livebearers are basically baby-machines. They will produce lots of fry every month or so. I think that if the other fish aren't too bothered by them (which is quite amazing) then leave them in the main tank. The problem you are going to have to solve is where to house them all. Your best bet is to try to find a Local Fish Shop who will take them (not all do), otherwise in a few months, you will be overrun.

Thanks lock man,

I think i'll get another tank to house them when they get a bit bigger (and for any future fry, if they are going to keep breeding! how long will the molly keep breeding for?)  and possibly ask at the LFS if they'll take some.

I meant it when I said baby-machine. All the while she is sharing water with a male, she will be dropping fry, and then for another 6 months after her last contact.
