Hi I am almost 100% sure that the Sumbu Dwarfs have indeed spawned. All the classic behaviour and tell tale signs, she finally emerged from her shell after hiding in there for the last three days. She is hovering above the shell, I was looking in to the tank today and seen some movement in there, seen three greyish "blobs" a few mm in size, big black dots at the front.
I was thinking of a floating fry trap but now........
I have heard of tank dividers, are these fairly inexpensive ?
I'm not sure how much of the tank I would need to partition ?
Would I just leave mum in there ? as dad seems to be taking a back seat except when anything goes near the shell... ?
What about feeding ?
Also on a final note, the other female has been "in hiding" for a few days , had seen the male getting frisky with her prior. Should she have her own partition also ?

I would get a separate tank for the fry. I purchased a divider and it had some gaps between the tank and its self. I did not really like it all that much. I'd rather buy a separate tank.

all i use is a plastic tank
the ones you get at the pet shop
kids tank a couple of gallon
with a 25 watt heater and an
air powered sponge filter as for
lighting i use a desk lamp

Congratulations on the fry!!! :good:

I just read an article about a guy who bred these dwarfs, and he kept the fry with the parents. I would personally leave the fry in with the parents, especially if they are taking up residence in the Mum's shell territory. I'm guessing that it is the fry's natural instinct to stay close to the parents because the parents will protect them. If the parents were any harm to the fry, I'm sure the fry would have been looking for a safer territory by now. Although, I would definitely keep an eye on the interactions between the adults and the fry.

As for feeding, you can either crush up some flake, or get some of the powdered fry food. I tried the liquid fry food, but I think by the time you actually can see the fry, they are big enough to be eating the crushed/powdered food. What are you feeding your adults?

Adults been feeding on vegetable flake, frozen brine shrimp, very occassional frozen bloodworm and krill, occassional live daphnia , glassworm , brine shrimp.
Tried the liquid fry food yesterday, even tried some in a small dropper and placed it near the shell area. Spotted more fry in the shell this morning(about a dozen)
Very excited and very nervous. Very concerned that the dwarf rainbows might use them as tasty snacks.....
I was very tempted handing the Multies over to LFS but to my surpsise someone had done so the day prevoius, a trio with fry and a bunch of shells, swapped for a tub of food (?)

Yah, I would say some of what you're feeding the adults (flake and frozen foods) the fry will be able to pick off some of the smaller bits that the adults won't even bother going for, but seeing as how you've already bought the liquid fry food, it isn't going to hurt giving that to them if you can see they are interested in it. I think when I first noticed the fry they only ate the liquid food for about a week, and then they didn't seem to want it and that's when I moved on to the powdered flake fry food.

As for your rainbows, I would be concerned on them eating the fry too. I guess it depends on how protective Mum is, cuz if she's got any spunk in her like a Multi I wouldn't be too concerned.

A tub of food for spawning Multis, rofl. I was robbed!

If the rainbows come over to the comps shells, momma sticks her head in the shell and shakes her tail, pops then comes over and hangs over her and then chases them away, the interaction is really interesting, I will hopefully pass the rainbows on even if I give them away FOC but I really grudge LFS getting them aahhhh. :grr:

Did you get your fish moved on and get away to USA ok ?
Any tank set ups in the pieline ?

Amazingly, I'm still here in the UK. Some stuff happened and the move got postponed for a while. I still have the Multis. I've been meaning to take new pics of them and post them up for sale, but I just haven't brought myself to do it just yet. The fry are all doing well, except for one who is missing his tail fin. I'm not quite sure what happened, I'm thinking one of the bigger fry is the culprit. I'll try and get a pic of 'no-tail' cuz it's quite amazing how he's able to get around still.

Quick update, found more babies in moms shell tonight (3rd spawn), also just found some baby assassin snails about an hour ago, how cool is that ?
