In the beginning of September I posted about an entire batch of fry clamping and dieing (well, 2 survived). All were born in my 3 foot tank and the smaller batch born to another female were not affected and neither were any adult fish.

Well... that same guppy has gone ahead and had her second batch of fry... and about 1 week on, they are all clamping again.... only... this time I did something differently... I separated the batch into two separate tanks to see if that made a difference (my thoughts being maybe something was wrong with my 3 foot tank)... but... that doesn't seem to be it. They haven't all started clamping yet but some are... and it happened one by one last time. Less of them are clamping in the second tank than the 3 footer.

What is going on?? I've been testing my water religiously since the first batch was clamping and I have yet to find anything there to explain it. My tank temperature are 24 in the 3 foot and 26 in the other one. I'm changing water every 3 days in my 3 foot tank and every 2 days in my other tank (due to that one being a lot smaller). All babies are being feed the same food. I bought a new container when the first batch started clamping in the case that this was related somehow but it has made no difference.

I have a red tuxedo due to give birth in not long and I really don't want her babies affected by this mystery as well (will be her first batch).

Update

Just wanted to update how things are and its good news this time! This batch has not gone the way of the previous one from this female. About half of the fry who initially clamped up like before died, but half got better and the rest are all fine now. :D

I do think I have less fry in my larger tank... but I think thats due to the odd female guppy deciding to eat one or two now and then... which is ok. I still have half the batch in another tank and they are thriving.

When i did a very large water change my ph went from 8.2 to 7.0 or maybe even less. I was using the high range ph liquid test. When i did the my smallest fry at 3 weeks old clamped it fins and continually rested on top of the stump barely moving for quite a few hours but then resumed normal activity. This is my only experience with clamped fins personally.

They all continue to swim around as best as they can clamped up... but sooner or later they die. My pH has been quite stable and is around 7-7.2.
