Can i assume that frozen fish food best before dates is much like human food - if remaining frozen still good for a month or two?

Just bought frozen glassworm at £1.25 as the BBD is June 2006 - the tetras and the zebra loach is loving them (the loach is out in full view swimming all over the place getting them :):) )

BUT I was wondering about how safe they are, cos I may purchase another pack to give them some varied frozen foods, will probably last into august if i did...

Best before dates have NOTHING to do with safety they are about quality, and even regarding quality it is the companies best guess. I dont think your fish will mind if the frozen food is a bit dehydrated...Just ensure that frozen foods do not thaw at anytime unless you are feeding your fish; ensure that no thawed food is at room temperature for more than 2hrs....(4hrs should be ok but with my fish I am carefull because I question the sterilty of frozen foods that most of the frozen food companies claim).

thanks for that, though i could be a biatch and argue that the declining quality effects the safety of the food... but ou are right, that is what i was aiming at :)

Going to get my father to pick up a couple of packs on his way home from work on tuesday as the store is in the town he works in.

"declining quality effects the safety of the food" no this is not true; in most cases food spoilage organisms wil out compete pathogens that can cause illness.

I don#t pay any attention to best before dates for frozen human food, let alone frozen fish food lol

These dates are there to cover the manufacturer's back, nothing more.

you could say the same about manufacturers recommendations on replacing your discs & brake pads on your car...

[edit] not to say that you cannot take it with a pinch of salt but even i have limitations - frozen food ill still onlyreally let get to 3 months beyond beest before dates. in the same way, when my brake light comes on, i just top up the brake fluid level for the next 3000 miles before making any replacements.
