Frozen Food - Defrost First?

I got some frozen daphnia for my fish, the kind that comes in a tray of little cubes.
The shop told me to just put it in the water and rub between my fingers so that it disintegrates.
Is this right or should I let it defrost first?

Always defrost it. The frozen foods can really do damage on a fish if consumed whole and very cold. They can go into shock. Best to defrost in some tank water. I use plastic medicine cups.

I personally let them thaw in and old cup with hot tap water to half cover the block, then pour into the tank about a half hour later,  have heard of folk who do throw them in directly from the freezer without issue, but I'm not even going to try!

Nah I've heard some horror stories about putting them in whole!

I always defrost first.  I don't see why anyone would want to throw it in frozen.  Its not a big deal to defrost it first, and its far safer for the fish, IMHO.

I put the piece of frozen cube in a Baggie and run it under warm water until thoroughly defrosted. That doesn't take long. Then I add a small amount of tank water,swirl it around in the Baggie and then release it into the tank.

I throw mine directly into the tank. Have done for years with no issues.
 
If you have fish that could swallow the whole cube in one, then that might be problematic.....but I've found that everything I keep just pecks at the block and it quickly defrosts anyway.

Never had a problem either putting them directly in the tank.

I feed a fair amount of frozen and it depends on the food as to how I treat it.
 
BBS and daphnia I toss in the frozen cube. I did this w/ frozen beefheart when I used to feed it.
 
Tubifex worms I will sometimes toss it in whole other times I defrost first.
 
Blood worms, mysis shrimp, brine shrimp gut loaded w/ spirulina and cyclop-eeze are defrosted. Blood worms are rinsed as well/

I defrost my bloodworms, it helps in splitting one cube between 3 tanks to lol

Just toss in frozen, always done it that way
