Hi all, i normally buy frozon blood worms and store them in the frezzer. My dad said he doesnt want them in there and says they will be ok just lying around the hse. I noticed them today sitting on the table and there expanding out of the packaging and leaking out of there individual cube casings...Can somesome tell me if they can be left outside of the freazer and fridge?...Cheers!....my dad thinks hes always right..Grhhh!!!!

Hi Thuggerz,

I would have thought if they were ok to keep out of the freezer they wouldn't have been frozen in the first place. They are perfectly safe to keep with food for human consumption as far as I know, as they are usually treated before packing. I keep mine in the freezer with human food and no-one in my family have had any adverse affects yet :good:

Once defrosted and kept in the fridge they'll stay ok for about 2 or 3 days. When kept out of the fridge or freezer they'll go off within 24 hours and are no good to feed anymore. Not to mention that they'll start to smell horribly. You also can't refreeze them, so your bloodworms will be ready to get thrown out now.

I can understand your dad not wanting to keep them in the freezer, even though it will not poison the 'human food' that's in there or anything. You might want to look into buying a mini freezer for your frozen food, or maybe your dad will be ok with you keeping them in the freezer if you bag them as well.

Hi Thuggerz :)

Please tell your dad that frozen bloodworms are no different than any other kind of meat. Once they defrost they immediately start to break down and decay. Please throw that package away immediately to avoid making your fish sick. If you open it now, you might be seriously grossed out.

Bloodworms are a good source of nutrition for your fish, but they must be kept frozen until use. I buy them by the pound and keep them in my freezer with no harm done to my own food. If your dad still complains, the next best thing for your fish might be the freeze dried tubifex worms which can be kept on a shelf. They are highly nutritious, but not all fish can digest them. If you do consider using them, it would be a good idea to ask for more information in the specific sections for the fish you keep.

Hi all, thanks for all your comments. It seemed obvious that frozen blood worms should be kept frozen, but try telling my dad that. He thinks he knows eveything!!!

I was away from home for about 4 days, so hopefully the blood worms have not been sitting around since then.

I keep mine in a plastic Tupperware tub, with an air tight lid, in the very bottom of the freezer. I just take one cube out at a time, leave it to defrost in an egg cup and then feed. All the humans in my household are still alive and kicking, so I would safely say that keeping the bloodworms in the freezer along with our food is perfectly safe.

Tell your dad he is a big wuss

There's nothing wrong keeping frozen bloodworm etc. in the family freezer, nor is there anything wrong in keeping LIVE MAGGOTS in the food fridge (as do lots of fishermen) unless you don't fit the lid properly :hyper:
