Calvus and compressiceps are my all time favorite cichlid and sadly I've killed 3 of them so far over the past couple of years
One was a while back, my fave girl (compressiceps) who I killed wth a chloramine accident
And then I bought three more about a year later...black calvus this time. I kept them in my 42 hex for almost 6 months and they did great until I killed one by dropping a rock on him by accident (dammit!) which left me with two.
So about 5 weeks ago I bagged up the two, bagged up my plec and moved them to the big tank, then drained my hex about 85% of the way because I'm taking it down.I acclimated them slowly...very,very slowly and then poured them in. One instantly went white and dropped dead
The other was freaking out and lying on it's side for like twenty minutes so I pulled him and put him back in the drained hex with an airstone
He stayed there for like two weeks...just lying there but then he took a sudden change and I decided to try again because that hex is just not the place to be. Soooo I bagged him up, acclimated him even ohh so much slower and as I poured the old water from his bag into a bucket that was holding ice cold soft betta dirty water he literally jumped OUT of the bag and into the bucket. So much for acclimating. Sheesh!
So I netted him and plopped him in the tank thinking oh well, what can I do now? Ya know. Jinkies these fish are just not meant to be with me or something.
Anyway, it's been three weeks now and he's doing great. But he literally has been doing great from the day I put him in. He seems as happy as I've ever seen him
I think, the last time I moved them, the sudden death was because I had done a water change on the front tank earlier that day and there may have been minuscule trace amounts of chloramine that none of the other fish would have ever noticed. These fish are just THAT sensitive. So now I use twice as much dechlorinator as I should whenever the calvus are involved.
Aaaaanyway, if you read all that, I adore you. And here, in his big tank debute is the toughest little calvus I've ever had the pleasure to meet/keep.
Here he is,holding his own.
Hangin' with the big guys B)
clown loach chillin' in his favorite spot
My syno...
And finally, my bestest front pic EVER!
If you've made it this far, thanks for looking and listening to my rambling
