I have bought a 20 gallon tank, I have yet to buy anything for it. Because I am trying to find out as most info as I can before getting myself into it. I dont know much about any of the freshwater fish or tanks. I want a african dwarf frog I think but does this go with small fish or no? Any advice on which groups of fishes go together would be of great use. And sand or gravel work with any fish/frog?

First off congrats on trying out the aquatic hobby.

African Dwarf Frogs try to eat anything that can fit in their mouths from what I have read about them. So, any fish that goes in a tank with the frog must be about the same size as the frog. Anything smaller than the frog is going to be lunch (or dinner depending on the time of day). I think ADFs grow to be about 2.5 inchs long but I may be wrong on that. Some platies would probably go well with them as platies can be well with just about any fish.

Ya, they grow about 2.5 but that's all legs. They have really small mouths so you don't have to worry about them eating many fish. Zebra danios would be a good choice they stay at the top of the tank. Then you could get a middle swimmer like a group of some kind of tetra. Then your bottom dwellers, the african dwarf frogs. So all levels of your tank would be busy and there would be no frog attacks.

There are two different types of African frogs available, the African Dwarf Frog and the African CLAWED frog. The last one is a real nasty predator that is illegal in some states in america. You can tell them apart by the number of claws or fingers and the position of the eyes.
The Clawed frog has three claws and its eyes are on the top of the head
The Dwarf frog has four fingers and eyes at the sides of its head.
The dwarf is very mild mannered and is no threat to fish, plus they look kind of funky! They ideally need live food like bloodworms, but can get by on frozen.

Well in my 18 gallon tall I have:

5 danios - top
6 glowlights tetras - middle
1 betta - all over (preferes to play in the bubbles)
4 ghost shrimp - bottom
3 ottos - bottom

You have two more gallons than I do and since yours isn't tall like mine your could probably add even more fish. But that is community with the biggest variety of fish and they all get along great. So that's a rough number. But it doesn't depend on the amount of fish. It depends on the size of the fish.

here is what my tank looks like:
3 zebra danios (top)
2 dwarf gouramis (middle)
3 leopard cories (bottom)
3 swordtails (middle)
2 neon blue rainbowfish (middle)
3 harliquin rasboras (middle)
all in all it is a very active tank everywhere!
HTH (hope that helped)

yes all u guys are helping, I know it depends on size but I dont want too big of fish, but I dont want any fish that are gonna kill other fish either.

you should try to stay around 1 inch per gallon
a great site for compatibility is peteducation.com or sometimes just typing in the name of the fish you want to research at yahoo.com works
