So I have a tank with a "freshwater moray eel". Of course I know this is a brackish eel. I currently have the salt set at 1.012 but plan on raising it up to around 1.018 over time.

I read that SW snowflake eels like salt levels around 1.020.

Would it be ok for both species to house them together and have the SG somewhere around 1.018 to 1.020?

I've asked similar question on here in last few months so a search should reveal your answers especially as Neale Monks answered it, basically they can be kept together at that salinity(if memory serves me correct)

Agreed, should work. Your greater challenge is gettin gthe snowflake to eat.

Is he harder to feed than a freshwater eel?(also i think called a snowflake eel)

My freshwater eel i didn't see eat for about 1 month. but I threw in ghost shrimp, guppies, and goldfish.. lots of them... and I assume he ate some. I had many other feeder fish eating species in the tank though.

I finally saw him eat when i started throwing in small crawfish, here is a pic of him eating one.

I now throw in about 2 crawfish a week plus feeder fish are usually available in the tank.

My Freshwater moray goes mad for the food and I have to watch my fingers when I#'m placing the lancefish for the toads. voracious feeders

Its hard to get them to start eating. Once they start, they become voracious as well, but the saltwater species can sometimes be very difficult to get to eat. Often times people have had success with having other marine fish in there with them, blasting the tank with food, inducing a feeding frenzy which sometimes gets the snowflakes to snap out of it... Thats really all I know. Lynden or Andywg have more experience with these critters than i do

I don't have a eel, but want one someday so I've been reading alot. I do know that feeder goldfish are not recommended esp for the marine eel. Something about fatty liver disease, besides the potential for them to be carrying parasites....which can't be good

Both mentioned muraenid species tend to feed readily. It is useful to feed with a degree of docility, such as with a feeding stick, to create the least amount of disturbance in the tank. As SkiFletch mentioned, when they begin eating they usually stay very voracious. The bst foods are raw shrimp and silversides... the worst are feeder goldfish, in my opinion. Feeding live fish, in my experience, also makes the eels more aggressive and predatory toward tankmates.

Adding more eels (all at once, to avoid cannibalism) can have the same effect, a sort of "pack mentality" I have observed in my specimens of Gymnothorax tile. This can be useful as it increases the chance that they will all feed, since one is likely to start eating by pure chance, and the others, apparently not to be outdone, will follow. This technique can work with other predatory fish species in captivity.

Remember also that you would have more stocking options if you raised the salinity to full strength marine, as both mentioned eel species do best in this range anyways.

i house those species together and they get along just fine, actually my snowflake dose't leave the big freshwater (as they are called) alone. Make sure to feed them both though...which can be difficult because the SW snowflake will always try to get its meal first. lol :) If you are looking for fish that actually..move..eels arent for you though.

Strange enough my saltwater snowflake eel ate the second day i had him =) I fed him krill at first but he stopped eating it after a week and got silversides and he eats like a horse with those sadly he stopped eating after having him for a cpl months 3 days later he died i couldnt find a reason when my anomne and all my corals and fish are perfectly healthy ,but tomorrow i am taking a water sample to my lfs to check on water quaility.

My eel was very active in its 175g reef home.

got a snowflake on flake at work, man its a pig, tis wicked though thinks the lionfish is a piece of krill sometimes though.

snowflake eel is a reason il come back over to the salty side!

What are you keeping with the moray? I hope you are smart enough to have gotten the freshwater fish out of your tank by now. Newts are not saltwater. Also crayfish are poor moray food. Why are you getting more fish? Shouldn't you relax and settle down for a while.
