Freshwater Clams

I was gonna get them in my 60L, but I heard they only live around three months, and when they die you can get a big ammonia spike. Given that they live under the substrate most of the time, the first you may know of this is when all your fish die suddenly. Not a great combination.
 
I bought some and for the first hour I found them slightly interesting to watch burring themselves but once they were gone that was it. Whats the point when you can't see them.. :/
 
Clams are filter feeders and need a massive flow of water and food. They cannot survive in tanks.
