Hey folks,

I'm a plant noob, so I apologize if this question is trivial or an insult to planted tankers. :)

I've been doing 10-15% water changes every other day, on top of a ~50% water change in a moderately planted 20 gallon tank.  The tank is fully stocked.  I use Seachem's Flourish Excel for liquid CO2, API's Leaf Zone for potassium and iron.

I just tested my nitrate levels and they are consequently low, at the ~5-10 ppm range.  The plants seem healthy and happy.  But, is it possible to get nitrate levels too low for plants by doing too many water changes?

I'm doing these frequent water changes to help heal an injured barbel on my cory.  Also, I just want to see what difference it will make to do more frequent, smaller water changes as opposed to a larger water change once a week.

Thanks for any help!

It depends on how much nitrates are in your water supply, where I live there is a lot in my tap water. If you don't have any nitrates in your water then I guess its possible however the plants will enjoy the fresh water. If your nitrates get too low for too long then you may run into problems but I'm guessing you will only be doing the frequent changes until you fishes health improves

Indeed, as above. If you have high lighting and your plants are growing enough then yes, you could start to see nitrogen deficiency. Test your water before adding it to the tank.

If you start to see deficiency you could switch the API stuff for Tropica "Plant Growth Specialised Fertiliser", which contain N and P as well as everything else, or go the cheaper route in the long run and buy the dry powders and mix your own of course :).
