So if you saw my post in the emergency section you'd see that my 36 suddenly has Ich. We had to go ahead planting the 75 anyways because we have live plants. Have a big piece of driftwood on slate -- planted the whole tank and then were filling it and it floated, uprooting almost everything. This is such a freaking clustermess. I can't believe how terribly this has all worked out. I mean it really couldnt have went any worse.

Throw it in a bucket, pour over hot water to completely submerge it, and leave it fro a few hours. "Driftwood" and "Bogwood" are two separate things, and the latter seems to sink nicely, driftwood often needs soaking to swell and take on water so its heavy enough to sink.

Failing that, you could tie it to a peice of slate and bury the slate in the substrate...

:)

dont get down on your self!

i usually have a hard time with that initial planting as well, especially with lots of live plants and wood and everything. it just takes time and patience.

you'll get it sorted! just take ur time.

and i still have a piece of wood ziptied to a rock to keep it from floating, its been in there for months, so its probably ok by now, lol.

oh, and its going to be so worth it in the end!

It is already attached to a piece of slate. . . Apparently one that isn't strong enough. Already lost a couple fish. I mean seriously, it couldn't have went any worse. First finding Ich on everything and then planting the whole tank only to have this happen.

Ya, it really was. Ive been preparing for this build for ages too. Finally had everything in order and live plants were delivered. Began planting with the tank half full and got all the plants in. Then looked in the 36 and realized it had developed Ich. More than likely because I hadn't cleaned it for 6 days. There are a crap ton of fry in there and they get the tank dirty fast, and I was out of town and couldn't be as diligent as I usually am.

I had used to buckets of that tanks water to start filling the other tank so the damage was done in terms of getting Ich water in there. I didnt care at that point so I grabbed all the fish I could that didn't look like they had Ich and moved them. Couldnt catch them all though and couldnt remove the big root that gets in the way because my male plec was in there guarding fry. I decided to try to move it for a second anyways because I didnt think they had hatched yet and about 40 little plecs fell out on a towel. Got them all back in and put the root back in and everyone was fine.

Then filled the big tank the rest of the way and about 80% to the top was when the wood floated. It was mounted on a piece of slate that is like 14" x 10" so it pulled up a crap ton of plants too. I tried putting rocks on it but it kept coming up. So today I went and get a 35 gallon tub and weighed it down in there to soak. I got some more slate that I'm going to cut to match the piece it is mounted on and I'm going to use silicone sealant to adhere them together and try again with 2 pieces of slate on it. Problem now is sand is all over the bottom where it was so I'm going to have to figure out how to get most of it out of the way to get it back on the bottom. I was thinking of getting some pieces of hard plastic and cutting them to make a frame about 1" bigger than the piece of slate it is on and then put one piece in at a time and scoot sand to form a little pocket to plop it back down in. Not sure how it is going to work out.

So now I'm stuck preemptively treating the 75 for Ich, treating the 36 for Ich, and then eventually getting it all settled. Should be an 'exciting' next few weeks.

The disaster continues. It is wiping out my entire plec tank. I've probably pulled 60 dead fish in the last couple days and they keep dropping like flies. I think I now see Ich on a catfish in the new 75 too. And the live plants are doing terribly. Ughhhh. All this literally is making me ready to give up the hobby already.
