Hello everybody
Around 12 noon today I feed all my fish and they all where fine. I feed them again at 6:00 pm and they all where fine. I was watching t.v and my husband was on the computer and he told me one of my fish was dead I didn't believe him at all because it hadn't been a little over an hour since I fed them all. Sure enough there was one dead stuck to the filter. So I do all the testing and changed the water. Here is all the info. Done test before my 25% water change.
Tank size: 10 gallon
pH:7.6
ammonia: .025
nitrite: 0
nitrate: 10
tank temp: 78

Fish Symptoms (include full description including lesion, color, location, fish behavior): No visual signs of anything wrong.

Volume and Frequency of water changes: I changed before the fish died 25% of water on January the 7th--I just changed 25% of the water after I found the dead fish

Chemical Additives or Media in your tank: I have a regent filter hanging on the back with just carbon and cotton in it. I use Complete care for the water conditioner and I use cycle every week and when I do a water change.

Tank inhabitants: 10 zebra danios, 1 golden chinese algae eater, one little male feeder guppy

Recent additions to your tank (living or decoration): nothing

Exposure to chemicals: No
The tank has been set up for a couple of years. The only thing I have done different is taking some of the fish out for a new tank that is cycled. I have been adding them to the new 44 gallon tank 2 every week. I also took out a sponge filter about a week ago to help with the cycle in the new tank but that is all. So I don't know what could have killed him. Do you think the algae eater could have done it? Maybe old age? That is all I could come up with. This is a hard one but if anyone has any ideas please let me know. Thanks for taking the time to read my novel....

I suspect you taking the sponge out or something else has sent the tank into a mini cycle.

Your ammonia is 0.25, which is too high im afriad.
You need to do 20% water change and then wait an hour and re-test. If you have anything above 0 on Ammonia or Nitrite, do another 10% water change and so on until they are both 0. Just be aware you will start getting Nitrite readings within a day or so, which you will also need to manage in a similar way.

Pretty much any ammonia is deadly to your fish, plus as your PH increases so does the toxicity of the ammonia.

:good:

Hi spooky
Thanks for your advice. Since I done the 25% water change last night they seem ok this morning none dead. I'm going to check the ammonia, nitrites and nitrates in just a minute. But I also have to tell you that I tested my water out of the facet and it is also .025 I think this is my whole problem in all my tanks because I read on a forum about testing out of facet because no matter what I done I tested .025 in all my tanks. I'm using Complete Care right now for my water conditioner but when all the bottles are gone I'm going to go with Prime because I was thinking about Amquel but I read too that it can affect ph levels and Prime will not. I didn't think just putting a sponge filter in a cycled tank then taking it out a week for another tank to help with the cycle would have caused a problem or I wouldn't have done it. Oh well, I will not do that again. There is always something new to learn in this fish business. If the ammonia is still there which I know it will because it is in the facet what would you do about it? I want to go ahead and buy the Prime but I don't want to throw all the Complete Care away that is a lot of money wasted. :(
Can you mix them? Thanks again
