I know I said I would never get another fish from petco..but as I was picking up stuff for my parrot, they had added a large display of bettas and i had to just take a peek. the lady told me they only get in veil tail bettas so I was overjoyed to see that I spotted a comb tail! his fins are very short though so I wondered if he was actually a female..he was the only one and "he" had vertical stripes on him. I figured he was distressed so I when I brought him home I automatically put him in some bettamax. He is the strangest acting betta I have ever seen before. He freaks out if you get near his tank and swims around frantically in circles, then when you leave he stops and relax's. He also wont eat unless I leave, I put 5 betta gold bites in his water and he didnt move the whole time I was there, but as soon as I left and came back a minute later they were all gone. His stripes are still there after a whole day of recovering from being in the petstore in a big tank with yummy food..I wonder why this is and why he or she acts so strange.. I will try to post a pic soon to see if anyone can distinguish what sex this betta is.

Is there a prominent white spot between his pelvic fins?

right now he is in the blue water because he was so stressed when I got him, so I cant see if he (or she) has a white spot there. I will def check tomorrow when I change the water, its already loaded with fishy poop! he eats like a pig (ill be sure not to overfeed this guy)

I have a blue veiltail male, and he is a SPAZ. He is constantly moving, swims in circles, and also seems to freak out more (can't tell if he's happy or scared cause he goes to the front of the tank) if you get up close to him. His underside is white between his pelvic fins, but I think it goes up past his gills a touch.

Does this signify something? Is he sick? Or a particular brand of crazy?

Edit - He also snaps his mouth at particularly nothing quite often.

Exactly what this one does! He is constantly biting at the top of the tank or at the sides, very odd :fun:

The white spot that itty was referring to should look like a little white string. If the betta has one of these, then it is a female.

Tiff

Well, this guy is definitely not female. And the white spot is not string like, I think it's just his colorization. I guess I just have a really hyper betta. :hyper:

I changed "his" blue water today, and looked very closely, there is a long white spot there, and also "he" is placed next to my other male betta in my room and although my opaque male flares constantly as "him" he has not flared back at all and I am now assuming this is a female. Her stripes dissapeared and she is now a vibrant rainbow of colors, but her head is a muddy brownish color. Hopefully this is a female and if sharkie starts building a bubble nest will that definetly tell me this is a female? ah I hope so cause I am setting up my 20 gal tank soon with dividers and plan to start breeding.
