Hello everyone, I just found out that the water conditioner I use Tetra AquaSafe with Bio Extract contains a small amount of Formaldehyde ( less then or equal to 2.5%). The purpose of the formaldehyde per the company is to neutralize any heavy metals in the water. Well I have learned that this may effect my little experiment with Dr. Tim's bateria product, I have also learned that most of the products on the market today contain formaldehyde (or some variation there of) to neutralize the heavy metals. So here are my questions:

1. Does anyone know of a water conditioner that does NOT contain formeldehyde (or any varation of the adelyede family)?

2. What effect will this have on the fish?

3. What effect will a formeldhyde product have on the cycling process (I think this may be why my cycles are taking so long)?

4. Does the formaldehyde evaporate out of the water? - I always let my treated water stand for a minimium of 48 hours before using, I know this is not necessary but it is just an added procaution that I like to take.

EDTA also contains cyanide; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EDTA This is what is used to chelate metals, essentially binding them into a salt. When made into EDTA the formaldehyde, as well as cyanide have no effect as they would as individual components.

Thanks for letting me know ... I feel better about it now. I knew that they would not be selling a harmful product, but I really did not want it to effect my cycle process ... it takes long enough as it is :)

Thnaks again
