I am currently using flakes to feed my fish but I was talking to a manager of my pet store and he was recomending pellets. He said it doesn't float to the bottom as quickly as flakes and also helps control nitrates. Does anyone else use them or recommend them?

If you mean pellets like shrimp pellets, then no. Pellets are made for bottom feeders meaning they are suppose to sink to the bottom which means it sinks fast, not even staying at the surface of the water.

I know what you are talking about but those are not them. I have those myself for my bottom feeders.

Ok then. I guess they are like the food i fed my oscar when i had him.

If it is the same as what i fed my oscar then they float much better. I never even seen them sink down!

Yeah I have something like that, that I feed my pond goldfish because they don't sink as easily

I like flakes better so the bottom dwellers get some food as well, not just relying on the sinking pellets

Not too sure about helping with nitrate - my only guess would be that food isn't left to rot at the bottom of the tank

Don't know how much of a difference that would really make with nitrates though. Eventually the pellets would sink to the bottom, either by getting pushed down by a filter and absorbing to much water, or an aerator moving it around. The thing you have to watch with pellets sometimes is that they can expand when they absorb water. So I would be careful with certain pellets as they can do more harm then good.
