Hi,
My tanks been cycling for a week now and i'll i've done is add API QS and some fish food as a source of ammonia. Today i came over to my aquarium and noticed a large foamy thing on top of my water. I'm not too worried as to how serious it is as there is no livestock but could someone please help me identify what it is?

Juwel Rekord 70l
pH: 7.3
Day 7 of fishless cycle

Could it just be bubbles produced by the filter collecting on the surface? This can happen if you have a spray bar or if the output from the filter breaks the surface. Is it more like scum or just bubbles? A picture would help.

Hi,

The output from the filter has a nozzle on the ejects from the surface and creates ripples everywhere along the surface. I will get a picture up later as i have college now.

Often caused by fine dust that has worked it's way out of the new substrate and floated to the surface. Tiny bubbles then stick to the dust and it creates the foam. Scoop it out with a cup. It will soon stop doing it once all the dust has come out of your substrate. Very common with sand, but also happens with gravel.

This is most likely the reason.

And I now have "Smoke on the Water" going round in my head!
