In your peoples opinions how often should a filter medium be changed. running a in a tropical tank should it be every two weeks, 3 or maybe 4 weeks, getting a tank ready for discus. and also are there any specifics in the mediums used in filter for a discus tank.

I know i may be asking some silly questions but i need to be absolutly shaw i get these things right first time.

I've ran a fluval 305 for ages and the only media I think I've ever changed was the poly wool I put in the top basket to polish the water. In fact I have just binned the 305 and gone for 405 as the motor died and wouldn't restart but I've had for quite a few years now and was toying with the idea of a bigger filter anyway.

The rest just got a quick freshen up with tank water to remove any sludge that may block it up.

But then I don't run it with carbon or any other chemical media. The bottom basket is full of the bio prefilter, the middle one with more bio filter then the top is poly wool, others may run different setups in their filters but this has been fine for me and my tank looks clean.

I also run a Rena XP filstar (I think thats its name) with a similar filter medium in it as well as I have a 500 litre setup and prefer to run 2 filters rather than one big one.

I never change my filter materials. It will only get to be the same as the old one in a months time.
