as wilder advised me to take the poly-carbon sponges cartidges out, i decided to have a go, i followed the instructions and tried to get he cartridges out but when i go to do it all the fish poo and debris falls out and goes in to the tank...iv tried this twice now...any one with the same filter give me any help lol.....i did an emergency 50% water change with gravel vacuum, and re-tested my water and theres 0ppm ammonia proberbly thanks to my external filter hopefully....so yea any help is welcomed :D

Try lifting the entire fiter out into a bucket before you open it up. As long as you dont keep it out of the water too long it should be fine.

I found the same thing when I opened my U3.

tried thats aswel :( same happened agai and i kept it upright as it said in the instructions....arrrghhh lol

I wouldn't worry too much about the release of some of the 'gunk'. It's very quick and easy to rinse the pads and the filter should then clear your tank (depending on size) within an hour.

When I did the exact same thing with mine I was concerned as well. Tanks stats didnt alter and there has been no ill affect to the fish.
