Hi, Firstly cheers to all that helped when i had nitrite problems. Was mostly down to fish growing up and doing what livebearers do best... producing more live-bearers! ....hence reaching overstocking level for the tank.
......now on with today's query :good:... Have gifted several of the fry on to a new home and they are doing just fine with their new owner. Have transferred all fish, water, gravel, filter et al to 110 Litre fluval tank and added extra de-chlorinated water gradually and they are much happier now. Nitrites, Nitrates and ammonia all good now and stock at lower level. I know that the existing fluval 2plus will not cope with the larger tank but have acquired a new Fluval U3 (at a very good price) from ebay.

I would have loved an external filter but need to convince the misses about that one as she will freak if it leaks! Am working on that one :shifty:

My plan is to run both filters in this new tank until bacteria build-up in new filter before taking the old one out. Will there be any spikes that i need to worry about??? Is there anything i can do to make it as smooth transition for Mr Brislenose , Kleenex (the Rummy nose tetra) and Evil Edna and their friends! (Daughter named them... not me!)

just put the filter media from the u2 in to the u3 as then it will already have the right amount of bacteria to cope with youre fish as if you run 2 filters side by side then each filter has 50% of the bacteria so when you take one out then you only have 50% of you're bacteria left and will probs overload the lone filter.

Its not a u2, its the older 2plus. I don't think they will fit will they???? its not arrived yet... hopefully tmoz :) never dawned on me that bacteria would be split between them, just thought extra would grow in new filter

Not sure if it would fit but if it does just put it in and pack extra around it if you can and then your new tank will basically be instantly cycled cause it will have all the bacteria need to cope with the fish you already have.

cheers... i will try that :) hopefully it will be here tmoz. Got to get it right as loosing a fish is not an option... daughter checks them every morning!

Plus 2 media will fit into a u3 but it will be a bit smaller.

When you get the u3 don't use the black carbon pads instead just stick the plus 2 sponges in there instead.

You will see what I mean when you get it.
