That sounds like the top isn't sitting correctly on the bottom bit.. pull it apart, and get someone else to put it together using the instructions manual, preferably someone who has never seen a that specific filter before.. it could be as simple as the pre-filter currently being upside down or getting the top on the wrong way around so the mains lead is in the way.
No, mine was 3-4 years old when I sold it on here and the seals never needed replacing.
Also if it's only 4 months old, it is covered by the warranty still.
