Hi guys
Just thought I'd make a quick post after something I recently discovered..
I was setting up my new Fluval external filter, and decided to watch the instructional DVD outlining how to install it. Whilst watching it, it said that you should clean all filter media under running water straight from the tap, whether its for the first time or for your normal (weekly or so) maintenance. This is clearly nonsense - doing so would damage the beneficial bacteria etc and would cause the filter to stop functioning properly.
The reason they say this is, as far as I know, is that tap water in the States contains very little chlorine, which is the main reason UK fishkeepers use some sort of dechlorinating substance before water changes, or use tank water to clean their filter media.
So just a little warning - Don't use UK tapwater if you're installing one of these filters!!!! (they should really tell you at the store where you bought it from...)
If I am mistaken please feel free to add to this topic.
Thanks
