Hi all again,

Got this tank, cycled it, put some fish in it. The filter in it is a fluval 3+. I think it's a bit to powerfull for the tank lol. These are the tank measurements: 80l x 34w x 45h. Not sure of litres and gallons.

Firstly, can someone tell me how to work out how many gallons i've got in my tank.

Secondly, my fish are getting thrown about the tank with the fluval 3+. (this came with the tank, hence hurricane). What would u suggest.

Thirdly, what would u put in this tank (fish)

I'm thinking this tank may need a fluval 1+, looking at the tank as i type, the fish keep swimming to the filter then get thrown to the other side of the tank!!!

Have a look at this link to work out tank size:

Conversion

There should be a blue slide at the front of the filter enabling you to control the flow.
As for what fish, what have you got in the tank already? :)

The only thing I can suggest is moving the filter further down in the tank so the current isn't so strong.

my tank works out at 38.2 us gallons of water.

What filter would u suggest. The fluval 3+ is far to powerful and will stress the fish out.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

sambangert

I've just had a look, i'm even thinking a fluval 1+, what do u all think.

Will keeping the fluval 3+ kill my fish through stress.

The filter sounds about right for that size tank. I only use Fluval internal filters for my smaller tanks and haven't had any problems. Might be worth waiting for other members to pop along and see if they can recommend a filter for you. ;)

Can't really move it any further down, theres only about 4 inches from the bottom of the fluval to the bottom of the tank

The amount of water that the filter is kicking out seems really powerfull for the tank.

sometimes, the fish could be playing around in the stream. Mine sometimes do that. I even thought one had the twitfchy fin thing when they get disease, til i watches closer and it was just whne he was in filter stream.

It's a really powerfull stream it's kicking out, even on the lowest setting. I'm thinking of a fluval 2+, even 1, unless the one i've got is faulty. It just seems far to powerfull for the tank.

I have a Fluval 4+ and I find mine quite powerful too. What I do though is aim the flow nozzle at the rear of the tank on the heater and that tends to diffuse a lot of the flow and also distribute the heat efficiently. Hope that helps.

I've used a Fluval 3+ on a similar sized tank (20gal 80x12x12) with no problems. I had it in the back corner angled diagonally accross the tank and it was fine.

As has been suggested though, angle it to the back wall of the tank and it will diffuse the flow.

is your outlet a jet or a spraybar? i have 2 fluval 404's and am running one of each, the jet is far stronger than the spraybar as far as water agitation goes, try a spraybar before changing the filter and have it point to the front of the tank :)

I used to have the 4+ in my 4ft and it was still too powerful; use it on the lowest setting and buy a spray bar. Point the holes at the rear glass and slightly upwards; that should make a big difference, it did for me.

Can't believe I didn't think to suggest that....
It's what I do with most of my filters!
