hi every one again well ive missed the hobby so i decided to buy a fluval 190 aquarium, the thing is it comes with an external filter which i have never had before, though there seems to be no bubbles blowing from the filter can anyone help thanks............

ps im sure ill be asking lots more questions now ive got a new tank lol

ah ok thanks for your reply so how do i know if my filter is working then lol and the stick that looks like a dipstick for a car what does that do? and should it be up or down?

if u want to check the flow just raised the output pipe so that the water skims along the surface of the water..
the thing that looks like a dipstick is a manual pump to start the siphonic action in the tank.
it doesnt matter if its up or down..but you may as well have it down

:thanks: for your help fifefish top man, though the out put pipe is low in the tank there is a slight and i mean a slight ripple at the surface,so i guess its working.im used to lots of flow n bubbles with my old tank i had an internal filter lol,now i just have to wait on the tank cycling before i can add fish lol i suppose i can add a few plants n stuff in the mean time.

is there a gurgling,grinding noise?
if so gently rock the filter side to side to get ride of excess air

It's air escaping from spaces in the media and such, gently rock is as suggested until no more comes out and it should stop within hours, if not immediatly :).

My 405 has been running for a fortnight, and its still full of air, despite me rocking it, shaking it etc about 6 times.

If you want some air bubbles from the output, raise it so that some of the water is released above the water-line of the tank. Works for me.

Did you keep rocking it until no more came out?

How did you fill it up with water?

Is it still spitting out just a little bit of air every now and then, or constantly?

Yeh, rocked it from side to side, corner to corner when it first started up. Started it empty and let it fill through the hose before starting the motor.

Every so often, I hear air being expelled, so I rock it again. Seems it refils with some air every day.

Not that I think its a big problem, its pretty quiet regardless.

No leaking at all? Unless it's leaking, the air must still be in there from setting up (which is very odd, but not a problem because there cant be that much air) or the air is being sucked up though the intake during normal operation.

Have you opened since setting up, any unusual media?

Hasn't been opened since I switched it on 2 weeks ago.

The intake is 3 inched from the bottom corner of the tank - the only airstone is in the middle, so not air bubbles being sucked up.

And no, no leaks at all. Carpet 100% dry.

Ah the joys of a Fluval cannister. Just wait till it stops working after almost every water change and then decides to dump water onto the carpet when you aren't looking.

Aaah, nostalgia... ;)
