I bought my son a Fluval 204 cannister filter last month for his goldfish tank. He has 2 enormous Orandas in there and I thought a cannister filter might cope better with the waste.
This one just doesn't seem to be working though. The poo and gunk build up unbelievably in the tank and when I open the filter there doesn't seem to be hardly anything in there.
I have the same filter on my tropical tank downstairs and I have to clean it out regularly because it gets full of yuk.
Is it possible that I just have a faulty one? I have set it up the same as my original one but I am open to suggestions of something I might have done wrong. Is it acceptable to take it back to the shop if it doesn't seem to be working properly?? :(

If you believe its not working, yes, you can take it back.
Under the Sale of Goods Act, something sold to do something has to do it, otherwise you are entitled to a refund. Having said that, I have a fluval 204 and it works fine. If yours is a faulty one then you should still take it back and get a replacement; see if you had a duff one.

Having said that, what is your filter doing? When you plug it in, is water coming out the outlet pipe? If it is then the impellor is ok, and water is coming in through the housing and through the filter medium. Try adjusting the flow of the water to create more current and suction.
