i just want to know....
We have ordered a new tank.. Fluval190, it comes with an external filter (upgraded to the 305) now the pipes come up through the bottom, but poke up a fair bit.... i would like to use sand as the substrate - is my filter going to be mashed from sand particals?

I have sand in my 350 and its fine so far. Can't say long term as its only a couple of months old but the inlet is fairly high.

Thanks seangee - anyone else got a fluval190/350 with sand as a substrate with no problems????

The pipes coming through the bottom don't make much of a difference (the filter is powerful enough to suck up sand without the aid of gravity), it's the same as having an external filter with sand on a regular tank - how is the sand going to get into the intake? The intake of my fluval 305 on my trigon 190 is closer to my sand than the intakes on the venezia 190, and I've had no problems.

Thanks three-fingers. I just really didnt want any hassle, was going to go gravel because i was worried... but really i prefere the sand.. plus its better for plecs/corys so i guess sand it is then :D

Corys will certainly appreciate it! :) After seeing them in a tank with sand, I vowed to never keep corys in a tank with gravel. They are so much more active and interesting, always sifting through the sand.
