Hi all,
been cycling my new second hand tank for 4 days now. I have noticed the drift wood has developed a soft white algae coating over parts of it. They came with the tank and I water logged them while checking the tank for leaks; then gave them a clean with a water blaster before placing them. I also washed the gravel well but perhaps not enough. Got any ideas of what I have here.
Being new to the hobby if it helps. I have a 48 gal tank, Ph is somewhere between 7 and 7.5 at present while trying to reduce it. Tank gets 8 hrs of light, and have added some bacteria building liquid stuff supplied by the lfs. Has plants and temp is at 25C.

thanks in advance

this very often happens it did when i put the mopani wood in my tank it's just like a type of fungus/mould type stuff
you can either take it out and scrub it off or leave it , it's not harmful and some people like the look of it
I got apple snails and they ate it all off of my wood

You really shouldn't be chemically reducing your ph - what type of fish are you wanting to get cos most fish survive perfectly at 7-7.5

take care

Thanks Sarah

I think I'll get some snail.
As for fish I'm not sure as yet. I was thinking neon tetras and that is when the lfs said I need a PH of 6.5. In reality I probably need hardy non aggressive fish. What's your thoughts on Cherry or Rosy Barbs, Zebra Danios, Platie's, Corydoras catfish, some coolie's, Tinfoils, Spinners, and Bala's. How many small fish fit in a 48gal tank?
