Hi,

'Humphrey' has developed a gill issue - it was there from the day I got him but becoming more prominent. I'm led to understand that the only way to treat this is to perform surgery - but my question is are there any negative health impact to leaving it untreated - or rather, if I did leave it, what addition steps could/should I be taking or things to look out for?

This is a bit late but might be of help to others. It's just the membrane on the edge of the gill cover and nothing to worry about. You don't want to operate on it or do anything. If the fish had it originally, then it is probably just a genetic defect.
