Hello all!

Do floating plants inhibit gas exchange in an aquarium?
I only ask as water surface area is a major factor in stocking density calculation & surely floating plants must affect this?

Cheers

Andy

Yes they do, but they because they have aerial advantage, they have loads more CO2 to use than they would if in water, so they can transfer some of this CO2 into oxygen and excrete it through the roots fairly quickly.

So, in that sense and when you have floating plants, it will be even more important to situate your circulation so that the CO2 bubbles are being forced downward instead of going right to the top.....right?
