Floating Elodea

I have two bits of elodea floating about in my tank which came with my Amano Shrimps a couple of weeks ago, as something for them to hold onto in the bag. I was going to chuck them but I actually quite like them, as I don't have any other floating plants and occasionally the shrimp will go for a ride on it and the tetras lurk in the shade under it. From what I read it can survive whilst floating for an amount of time - but for how long? Can it live indefinitely in a floating state?

it can be used a s a floating plant forever. It floats in nature.
