A while ago I asked about “flies” in my fish tank. I’ve possibly identified them as Chironomid.
Basically these worm like “things” appeared in my tank but I never identified them as blood worm as they were brown where blood worm are red (they are a different colour; even to blood worm which is going off. But now after reading the links below I think they are one in the same thing…
I had them in my newt tank last year (half full of water) and the only way I could get rid of them was by scrapping the old filter and getting a new one.
Now I have them in my goldfish tank; I can’t change their filter (it’s an aqua one built in one that goes across the top of the tank and that’s where they all are). I can see thousands of the “larvae” in the water at the bottom of the filter and on Monday there were about 2 flies in there; this morning when I lifted the lid there were hundreds. I am very tempted to replace all of the filter media and start again but I know it’s not a practical solution for the fish. I normally “dispose” of them but I can’t handle hundreds of them per week.

Now for my question…how did they get in my tanks and how can I get rid of them?
The newts get fed frozen blood worm but then do does one of my tropical tanks (which doesn’t have it [yet]) and my goldfish do not get blood worm. I’m not sure if they are attracted to the colder water tanks or if they are attracted to the wet surface area of the half-filled newt tank and goldfish filter
