Flaring

What is flaring - Is it an effectional thing? A Sexual thing or an aggressive thing?

My instincts tell me that because the males do it at each other, then it is an aggressive thing saying "look how big I am keep away" - you know I don't think Archie likes me lol, because every time I go up to his tank he flares at me!

I was always told bettas flare at each other as a bluff. "See I am big and bad don't mess with me!!!" I am not sure why they flare at eveything else. Maybe they see us as a threat. Either way it is kind of fun to watch.

It sure is fun to watch, but I can't help but think what my reactions would be if it were a bulldog flaring at me in agression - it wouldn't be so much fun
