Hi! I'm new here and I have a question. I'd like to know what type of fish that will be compatible with my flame gourami.

Here's a little background on my tank and situation. I have a 30 gallon tank that has housed a large pleco and one black tetra for quite awhile. I had plans to dismantle the tank, but decided to clean it and redecorate then add new fish.

I added 2 pink kissers and a week later added 2 blue gourami. One pink kisser had an unfortunate mishap with my undergravel filter :( . One blue gourami died within hours of adding him to the tank. I returned to the pet store to have my water tested, which was fine. They gave me a slip for another gourami, but I decided to wait another week.

I returned for another blue gourami and they had none. Instead I was told I could add some flame gourami (I'm pretty certain that is they type). So I add 3. I'm sure you can imagine the consequence... the blue gourami chased and picked on them. It was very sad and they just cowered in the corner with the protection of the tetra and kisser.

After doing some research, which I should have done in the first place I guess, I found this site and other info. Apparently, this was not a good mix. Lesson learned! I gave the blue gourami to a friend and he's very happy with his tankmates and my flames are content as well.

I want to add a few more fish, but am unsure what the flames will get along with. I'd like some platys (sp?). Would those be alright? Would a school of neon tetras be safe in there? Do I need to add smaller fish? Will the flames become territorial? My pleco is about 8 inches nose to tail and I have 5 fish.

Thanks for your help!!!

Nancy

Thank you! I'll wait and see what others have to say.

Dwarf Gourami are generally peaceful towards anything that dosn't spend most of its time at the top of the tank, so i wouldn't add any fish like guppies and african butterfly fish

Neon tetras would be fine with them since they tend to keep to themselves while in shoal :) the platies would also do fine.

Do you know what kind of plec it is? At 8" i imagine it would be quite a messy fish so good filtration is a must

Dogg

Dogg,

Thanks! I have no idea what type. :dunno: I don't know the different types. He's dark brown with black spots so he looks black. I have a Penguin 330 and undergravel filter with a powerhead attached.

Thanks for your response!!
