so I think I have a male flag fish in my nano tank...

my understanding is females get a spot on their fin... the fish in my tank, looks like this, assuming that is a male,

so, I have a couple questions, with this species, do you think I can add an opposite sex fish, or am I better off treating them like cichlids, and letting them pair up in a community tank, and once they decided they like each other, transfer them to a private tank???

I have a nice large healthy looking fish, as pictured, if that's a male, I'd like to add a female...

Yeah, it looks like a male. Sometimes it is tough to tell depending on their age, condition and the lighting. But yes, the female typically has a dark spot on the dorsal fin. I used to keep and breed them for years. The problem is they breed like rabbits! Finding enough fellow aquarists who wanted the fry became a problem. I wrote about how I set up my first tank and breeding experience somewhere on this site. If you are interested, I can dig it out and repost it. Now that I am in Florida, they are everywhere in our waterways and I don't have any. Guess I should dip net some out of a canal and try it again!

well I ordered 2 pair... so that gives me 5 or 6 between others here, in an attempt to put together a good looking pair, that seem to like each other... the make I have right now, is excellent, so I'll start with him, unless one of the new males looks better, and keep adding the best female s to the nano tank, with the best male... and hope for the "best" mating pair...

in my opinion they're very peaceful fish, i doubt it would have any problem with a female being added, and pairs love spending time together.
The only problem have is that they are timid, and I believe my male fish jumped out and died :(

They are killifish - not relatives. They're closer to the pupfish of North America (makes sense) than to the slender western African fish.

I saw them during the one week of my life I spent in Florida, but they weren't close to the shore and I was distracted by someone trying to steal my car. I caught bluefin kills there (the very young wannabe car thieves were polite and apologized as they ran away '"Sorry man. we didn't see you. What the ^%^%$ are you doing in a ditch like that? Oh, fishing. Good luck.").

The bluefins were great.

I'd like to try flagfish some day. I've never gotten healthy ones. They always come into local stores looking like they've met tougher thieves than I did.
