2 bad rats cant swim then they would be in the forum...lol...But I never knew that Hamsters werent rats...They all look the same except that the hamsters dont have weird scaley tails... ...But how bout chinchillas? there the cutest rat of all...They are rats arent they?

Nope, they're not rats! As far as I know anyway...most rodents are different species...I think.

The ONLY rat is the one called a RAT. There is no other kind. Chinchillas, hamsters, mice, Degus, rabbits, gerbils, spiny mice. They are alll COMPLETLY different and have different care requirements.

Also, rats are EXCELLENT swimmers. A study once left a rat on an isolates island, 20 miles away from any other land. Within a week, the rat ripped off it's transmitter. Months later, they found the rat on another island, 20 miles away.

When i was ounger, I had a rat named Malakai who would willingly swim. There was a 40 foot wide puddle which he ran into whe n I wasn't paying attention, swam all the way across, and then swam back to me. ^-^

Like KeddyPie said, if it's not called a rat, then it's not a rat.... but sometimes it's not a rat even if it IS called a rat! For example, nutria rats and kangaroo rats are not true rats. Generally the only species considered to be "true" rats are those within the genus Rattus, but I think there are something like 50 species within that genus!
