About a month ago, I was washing my tank lid, and put it on my chair. Its all glass, and somehow, I forgot it was there in the middle of it and ran to my comp and sat down...right onto the lid.

So my tank was without a lid for a while, and in that while, my pride of the tank...my gold gourami decided to jump out of the tank.

Im not sure how long he was out for, but just on etime...I decided to "talk" to my fish, and I looked around...and to my horror, he wasnt there. I looked and looked, all the other fishies looked quite sad.

And I knew he had jumped out.

I searched under the cabinet which my tank was on top of and there it was, lying still...I thought it was dead...it wasnt even flapping around.

So I picked it up on the piece of plastic it had landed on...and I saw his fin move a little...so it wasnt dead yet.

I quickly put him back into the water, and boom!!....it took off like crazy...

it started swimming sideways...striaght up, then hit the glass wall, then straight back down smashing against the gravel. It had totally gone wack....i was very sad then cos I thought 100% he would dies soon.

So I put it back into the net, and left the net in the water so that he could breathe etc but not smash himself around everywhere.

Went to bed, and offered a prayer to him and hope he would live..

next morning... about 12 hours later, I found it swimming NORMALLY!!!! around in the tank. It had escaped out of the net when i was sleeping...and somehow was back to normal!!

But I noticed that over the next few days, some of his scales started turning black on one side at the top....I thought oh no....

but week or so later, that disappeared, and he's all healthy and happy again!

Im not sure how long a fish can live outside water for...but this survival story makes me like him so much more!

Sadly, he's grown too big for my tank now...and I have to give him away :(

Any1 have any other survival/revival stories? I think this one is quite special to me....

Great to hear it kinhan! I haven't actually had such things happen to any of my fish yet although I rescued a platty that had flapped out of a tank at my local lps! :D

Awww What a nice story, Kinhan. :D Thank you for sharing it with us!

I think gouramis tend to jump--mine have a few scars that they got from hitting the top of the tank. :X Every now and then I hear a splash that sounds like something a whale might make and it turns out to be one of them.

It's lucky your gourami escaped the net, because they are labrynth fish and need to breathe air from the surface like bettas do. It might have drowned if it couldn't get out!

I haven't had too much luck saving fish that jump out of the tank, but once I found one of my african clawed frogs on the floor. He was all covered in cat hair and looked really bad, but I took a chance and put him back in the tank. When he hit the water he made one huge wriggle and shed his skin with all the dust and hair on it. After that, he was as good as new.

Gourami's are Labyrinth fishies, which means they breathe air, so unlike other fish they won't 'drown' when taken from the water, but if he was out longer he could've dried up and become a fishie-mummy

glad he's okay
