hi i live in malaysia and i keep 4 tanks of assorted tropical fish.mostly livebearers and barbs. i live near at least 3 LFS that sell them v cheap.. platys, barbs n mollies go for less than 50 cents ea... gouramies for a dollar  then again this IS a tropical country  no need to buy too much stuff...
i wonder how much you have to pay in europe & the states?

thnx,

M.o.S

In the states (or at least here in the louisiana) guppies are $2.80, mollies $1.90, swordtails $2.80, and assorted platys $2.50.

But sometimes, you can get lucky and the suppliers will sell juveniles as "feeder fish" and you can get swordtails and mollies for $.08!!! (okay, so this only happened to me once, but it was still very exciting!)

In the Philippines: (converted to US currency)

Guppies: 15 - 70 cents each (course, these are LFS fishes, not show quality)

Platies: 13 - 27 cents, and 1 store I found was selling hifin pintails for higher, at 45-63 cents

I hope I'm not hijacking your thread, I was just going to start one similar to this, I'm curious if your LFS sell livebearers for the same price per species, or if some varieties are more expensive than others. For example, ribbon guppies, metallic, snakeskin, HB, etc--all the same price? Or blue, red, wag, tuxedo platies, hifins, etc?

What about males and females?

I've seen stores sell female guppies for less, some sell them for more than males.

in the UK
£!.10 guppies
5 for £5 platys or £1.20 each
mollies(not exactly sure)about 1.20?
swordies £2
all tetras £5 for 5
dwarf gouramis £3 each
fry 20 for £5

I'm also in the States..my lfs has
,
mollies $2.99,
Dwarf Gouramis $3.99,
Corys $2.99-3.99,
platys $2.99,
Swords $2.99,
Clown Loach $4.99-7.99,
guppies $2.99 a pair
tetras $1.99-2.99,
bettas $2.99
plecos $4.99-5.99 etc etc etc

Not sure about prices off all fish but I only by live bearers and barbs myself!

Prices are in Canadian $:

Platies: $1 (usually $1.29, but onsale for $1 every few weeks)
Guppies: $5 for a pair (any 2)
Barbs: $1.99 (cherry and golden barbs)
Tiger Barbs: $3.29

This is just a small LFS, but if I go to the city prices are a bit cheaper. Also at this little LFS if I by 5 fish, they mark it on a card each time, and then you get a free fish after 5 (they average out the price of the previous 5)

I wish I could get gouramies for a dollar! thats crazy.

At Petco most of the common fish are between $1.00 and $3.00

I think most of the danios I've bought have been about $1.50. The most I've paid for a fish so far is about $3.00 for a Pearl Tetra

My fish stores have Platies, and Mollies (all types) for $2.99. Guppies are $1.99, or $3.00 for a pair. Tetras range from $1.29 to $10.00, depending on the type. And Barbs are about $3.00. :)

hi Kittycat,
No not at all. I've always been curious about prices elsewhere because I think they're selling them way cheap over here. Livebearers are usually the cheapest, regardless of variety or size: in one store, an itty bitty swordtail costs the same as a full-grown hifin.

They tend to hike up the fancier looking fishies though, so the male guppies could cost double or sometimes triple the female prices. The most I ever spent was the $1 yellow gourami.

On the other end of the spectrum, i've seen arowanas & flower horns go for over US$200, not too crazy bout these giants (anything bigger than 2.5" is gigantic to me :p ) The chinese community here are big believers in anything symbolising wealth, so the silvery arowanas have a big fan base, and somebody told me that the patterns on flower horns look like numbers (depending on what you've been smoking :D ) so they run out and buy the lottery after a "vision"!

PS: I once thought i saw the nummers 2052 on a big old fish in a store & jokingly texted a friend about it... It came out one of the winning numbers the next day. In Singapore.

Thnx for sharing everyone, I guess I'm lucky price-wise!

Here in northern Sweden Swordtails go for $4.00-$5.60USD(29-39 swedish crowns) each. I paid $7.15 USD(50 swedish crowns) each for my Yoyos(pakistan botia)(I got a discount).

MoUtHoFsAuRoN, I think we're in the same boat. We have the same fad on Flowerhorns here, used to be the same with Arowanas, but they died down a little. Same superstitious beliefs. And like you, I'm more fond of smaller fishes (just seems like such a waste of space to keep only 1 big fish in a big tank when I can keep dozens of livebearers). Even swords are a little big for me.

i guess I'm also lucky with the prices, since fishes are cheap, and aquariums as well (the plain glass ones anyway). Dry goods from China and the like are also cheap, but US and European products come out way out of proportion to the value of most of the fishes (e.g. my water heater is worth my tank + air pump + corner filter + the fishes in there; or when there are sick fishes, their meds are more expensive than all of their value put together). I guess the low prices are not such a great thing for the fish, as they often get taken for granted or purchased without thought, planning or knowledge due to cheapness.

I'm not big on buying very expensive fish, the most expensive I got (per head) is probably the otocinclus, at a little over $1--oops, no, it was some SD bettas imported from Singapore at about $6.

Wow quite a bit cheaper by about a third than here in London

I think as many tropical fish come from that sort of area, they would be cheaper in the grand scheme of things. However it's not strictly comparable world wide due to economy etc. A guppy might cost 20cents in Malaysia and $1 in the USA - but then you have to ask what the average monthly salary is in Malaysia (and cost of living) in comparison to the USA.......
